I'm seeing a 'This worksheet is too large to import' error

The file size limit for uploaded spreadsheets is 5 MB. If you're seeing the error message WARNING: This worksheet is too large to import, first check to see if your .xlsx file exceeds this size.

What is an xlsx file?

.xlsx Excel files are archive files containing compressed .xml files.

If your .xlsx worksheet file is under the 5 MB upload limit and you're still seeing the message, it's likely the compressed .xml files contained in your .xlsx file exceed the file limit.

These .xml files inside the archive can actually be larger than the spreadsheet file itself.

How to check the contents of an .xlsx file

To see if your compressed .xlsx worksheet file contains .xml files that exceed the 5 MB upload limit, follow these steps:

  1. Create a copy of the .xlsx MS Excel file type.
  2. Rename the downloaded file extension to .zip.
  3. Unarchive the file (it will contain a couple of folders and files).
  4. Open that new folder it created.
  5. Open XL folder.
  6. Open Worksheets folder.
  7. This will show the file sizes and you can spot which worksheet tab is the largest.

What if my spreadsheet file exceeds the limit?

We recommend creating a new Excel file and referencing only the particular cells and/or metrics you want, and uploading that new file to Geckoboard.
