How to use templated dashboards

Learn how to use templated dashboards to build consistent dashboards with the same widget configuration, each filtered differently.

Updated today

Templated dashboards let you build consistent dashboards with the same widgets and layout, each filtered differently. Any changes you make to a widget apply across all dashboards in the template.

Dashboards in a template share the same widgets but display data for different Values within a Field, such as individual agents or specific teams. With a Zendesk Agent dashboard, for example, you select which agents to include, and Geckoboard creates a dashboard for each one. Any widget edits you make automatically sync across all dashboards in the template group.

Templated dashboards are currently available for Aircall and Zendesk.

Create a templated dashboard

To get started, you’ll select a template data source, add a Field filter, and then pick the Values you want to create dashboards for.

  1. In the dashboard sidebar, click the dropdown next to New.

  2. Choose the Aircall or Zendesk template.

  3. Select the Field you want to use to vary your dashboards.

    1. For example, you might select Agent if you want separate dashboards for each agent.

  4. Next, select the Values you want to create the dashboards for.

    1. For example, select the specific agents you want dashboards for; a separate dashboard will be created for each Value selected.

  5. Click Create.

In the sidebar, you’ll now see your template group with a dashboard for each Value you selected.

Add widgets

After creating your templated dashboard, the dashboards will be empty. You can now add widgets as you normally would.

  1. Open a dashboard from your template group.

  2. Click + Add widget.

  3. Select a data source and configure your widget.

    1. Notice that the filter is automatically applied (for Aircall or Zendesk). For example, if you created an Agent dashboard template and you’re viewing the dashboard for Jude, the widget will automatically filter data to show only Jude’s metrics.

  4. Click Add to dashboard to include the widget in the template.

The widget now appears on this dashboard, filtered to this specific Value. On the other dashboards in the template group, the same widget appears with its respective filter applied.

Edit widgets

When you edit a widget on one dashboard, the change applies to all dashboards in the template group. This keeps your dashboards consistent without needing to update each one individually.

  1. On any dashboard in the template group, find the widget you want to make changes to, click the ellipsis, and select Edit.

  2. Update the widget as needed.

    1. For example, update the time period to display the past 7 days.

  3. Click Save.

This specific widget is now updated across all dashboards in the template group.

Remove the filter

You cannot create widgets that appear only on a single dashboard within a template. Every widget you add is always shared across all dashboards in the template group, whether you apply filters or not.

Some widgets on your dashboard may need to display all data for a Field rather than filtering to a single Value. If needed, you can disable the Value filter on individual widgets while keeping them part of the template group.

  1. Edit the desired widget.

  2. In the filter area, click the checkbox to remove the filter.

    1. For example, deselect Agent IS Jude to show data for all agents.

  3. Click Save.

The widget now shows unfiltered data for the Field. This change updates the widget on every dashboard in the template group.
