What it is
A short abandoned call is an inbound call where the caller hangs up within the first few seconds, before an agent has a realistic chance to answer. Most teams set the threshold somewhere between 5 and 15 seconds.
Why it matters
Not every abandoned call is a missed opportunity. Callers who hang up after two or three seconds have usually misdialled, changed their mind or been cut off by the IVR.
They aren't hanging up out of frustration at the wait, so counting them as genuine abandonments inflates your abandonment rate and makes the team look worse than it is.
Separating short abandoned calls from the rest gives you:
A true abandonment rate, based on callers who actually waited and gave up
A fairer view of team performance, so agents aren't measured on calls they could never have answered
An early warning sign, because a sudden spike in short abandoned calls can point to an IVR, routing or line issue rather than a staffing one
How to set it up
Add a new widget and choose your phone integration, for example, Zendesk Support (which includes Zendesk Voice/Talk).
Select the Voice > Calls > Inbound calls > Abandoned inbound calls metric.
Choose a Number visualisation, and add a comparison with yesterday if useful.
Set the time range to Today, or match it to your reporting window.
Add a filter for Wait time less than 10 seconds.
This puts today's short abandoned calls on your dashboard at a glance.
Just as important: filter them out everywhere else
Spotting short abandoned calls is useful, but the bigger win is keeping them out of your other key metrics. Otherwise, they keep inflating your abandoned call counts and abandonment rate.
To do this, add the filter Wait time greater than or equal to 10 seconds to any widget that tracks abandoned calls. Your numbers will then only reflect callers who waited and gave up. These are the calls your team could have answered, and the ones worth acting on.
What it looks like
Put it next to a second widget showing abandoned calls over your threshold.
Together, they show which abandoned calls are noise and which ones your team needs to act on.
Take it further
Set an alert to trigger when short abandoned calls pass a threshold, for example, 10 in an hour, to catch line or IVR problems straight away.
Add a line chart by hour to see whether short abandoned calls cluster at certain times, such as right after opening.
Dig into the cause with the Metrics MCP. Connect Geckoboard's Metrics MCP to an AI assistant such as Claude, and you can ask questions of the same call data without building a widget for each one. For example:
"Over the last 30 days, how many inbound calls were abandoned with a wait time under 10 seconds? Break it down by hour of day and by phone number, and tell me whether they were abandoned in the IVR or in the queue."
The assistant runs the query against your Zendesk data and returns the numbers and a short summary, such as: "Most short abandoned calls happen between 9 and 10 am on your main support line, and most of those end in the IVR." That tells you where to look next. A cluster in the IVR indicates a menu or routing issue. A cluster in the queue on one number points to a line issue.
