Connect your Excel spreadsheet using Dropbox

Our Spreadsheets integration is a quick and easy way to transform your Excel files into beautiful dashboards. In this article, you'll connect and push data from your Excel spreadsheet hosted in Dropbox.

Before you start

If your spreadsheet data has been imported from a third-party service (e.g. Google Analytics, Salesforce, Zendesk, etc.), check if we have a pre-built integration for it. They are by far the easiest way to quickly get your data onto your dashboards, with each integration containing a comprehensive list of widgets with predefined KPIs, making things even easier for you.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for complete control over how your data is displayed, you can use our Datasets API to send data from a database or third-party service to your dashboards.

Connect directly to your Dropbox account

To connect your Excel file from Dropbox, follow these steps.

  1. Click Add widget, located in the top right of your dashboard.
  2. You'll see a scrollable list of Integrations. Click Spreadsheets.
  3. From the Choose File menu, click on the Dropbox icon.

    Important note

Only the .xlsx file extension is supported for Excel files. .xls files won't show in your folder.

Choose your Excel file from your Dropbox account
  4. If you haven’t done so already, create a connection to link your Dropbox account with Geckoboard.

    Note

The file size limit for uploaded spreadsheets is 5 MB.

If you're seeing the error message WARNING: This worksheet is too large to import and your .xlsx file is under the 5 MB upload limit, it's likely the compressed .xml files contained in it exceed the file limit.

Please see our guide to finding out why your worksheet file exceeds the limit.

  5. And that’s it! You're now ready to prepare a visualization using your spreadsheet data.

    Tip

Install the Dropbox desktop app and you'll be able to automatically sync edits to your Excel spreadsheet file with Geckoboard, just so long as the file name doesn't change.

Share access to a specific spreadsheet in Dropbox

If you only want to share access to a specific spreadsheet in your Dropbox account, you can create a sharing link and specify a direct link to a single spreadsheet, rather than connecting your Dropbox account.

To upload a spreadsheet and create a sharing link in Dropbox, follow these steps:

  1. Click Upload and select your spreadsheet file.
  2. Next, hover your mouse over the file then select Share.
  3. Select Create a link.
  4. Now click Copy link.

To use the Dropbox sharing link you've created and connect a specific spreadsheet file, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the dashboard you plan to use.
  2. Click Add widget, located in the top right of your dashboard.
  3. You'll see a scrollable list of Integrations, click Spreadsheets.
  4. Next, in the Choose File menu, select the  link icon.Choose your file from a direct link
  5. Then paste your Dropbox sharing link in the Link to File field and click Save.Choose your file from the direct link field
