Use casting devices to display a dashboard on a screen

Learn how to cast a dashboard to a screen using a Chromecast and Apple TV.

Updated over 2 years ago

We don't recommended casting and mirroring devices as a long term solution, as you'll need to keep your dashboard loaded on your desktop machine. They can be a useful option whilst trialing Geckoboard before using more suitable hardware.

Chromecast

Use a Chromecast to cast a browser tab displaying your dashboard on a TV.

  1. Create a share link for your Geckoboard dashboard and open it in a new browser window.

  2. For Mac OS, click View on the menu bar at the top of your screen (Mac OS). Then click Cast…

For Windows OS, click Chrome’s menu on the right side of the window and select Cast….

  3. In the Cast dialog select Cast tab, then click on your Chromecast.

Apple TV

Use AirPlay on Apple TV to display your dashboard on a browser tab on a TV.

  1. Create a share link for your Geckoboard dashboard and open it in a new browser window.

  2. Click the AirPlay icon in the menu bar at the top of your Mac's screen. If you don't see the icon go to Apple () menu > System Preferences > Displays, then select the Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available checkbox.

  3. Select your Apple TV. Make sure your Mac is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple TV. If an AirPlay passcode appears on your TV screen, enter the passcode on your Mac.

  4. Click the AirPlay icon in the menu bar, then select Use As Separate Display.

  5. Click and drag the Browser window with your dashboard right across your screen until it appears on your TV screen.
