Updated this week

In this guide, we'll cover the basics of connecting to Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and customizing your widgets. We’ll also cover advanced features such as Interactive view, which allows you to drill down into your data, notifications, and more.

Get connected

To begin, connect your Google Analytics account with these steps:

  1. Click the + Add widget in the top right corner of Geckoboard and select Google Analytics 4 from the list.

  2. Click the Sign in with Google button and follow the prompts to log in and create the connection.

Customize your widgets

Once you've made the connection, you can begin configuring your widget:

  2. In the Display field, select the metric you want to visualize.

  3. In the Time field, select the pre-built time period you want to show data for or choose Custom period from the bottom of the drop-down.

  4. If you're using a Column chart, Bar chart, Leaderboard, or Table, you can select the Group field to group data by specific dimensions.

Duplicate widgets to quickly build out the dashboard

Now that your first widget is set up, you can add more widgets quickly using the Duplicate feature:

  1. Find the widget you want to copy, hover over the top right of the widget, click the ellipsis, then click Duplicate.

  2. On the new copy that appears, hover over the top right of your widget, click the ellipsis, then click Edit.

  3. Make any necessary changes to the configuration.

  4. Click Save.

Repeat this process for any other widgets that you’d like to create or add a new widget and select from the pre-built widget options.

Arrange the layout of your widgets

To change the layout of widgets on the dashboard, we can move and resize widgets or group them together to make the relationship between data clearer. Here's how:

  • Move widgets with drag-and-drop; a box will appear indicating where you can drop the widget.

  • Resize widgets by hovering, then clicking and dragging one of the sides to change the height or width.

  • Group widgets by dragging and dropping a widget onto another to create a group.

Explore advanced features

Compare metrics on the same visualization

The Compare metric feature allows you to add multiple metrics to a single chart, showcasing relationships and highlighting trends. For example, you can compare Total users versus New users.

Compare against data from a previous period

On Number and Line chart visualizations, you can compare the current period to the previous period and display the change as an exact value or percentage. This may be useful if you want to compare Today to the Same day last week or Yesterday.

Bucket your data with Split by

With the Split by functionality on line and column charts, you can break data out into groups of your choice.

Set Goals and Status indicators

Set target goals to track progress and add status indicators for quick visual feedback. Customize your widgets to highlight metrics in green or red, depending on whether values meet your predefined targets.

Use Interactive view to investigate the data behind your widgets

Drill down and access the source data using Interactive view to see what’s driving your metrics. Quickly review the root cause behind changes in your data so you can take action.
